The ballets have all been counted and the results are in. This year we saw some pretty amazing wins as well as one TIE for Best Sound Editing. Believe it or not, this isn’t the first time a TIE has happened. “In 1932 Fredric March and Wallace Beery tied for Best Actor but it wasn’t a true tie. March, who won for his role in “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde,” actually had one more vote than Beery, who was nominated for “The Champ.” The rule at the time stated that if a nominee came within three votes of the winner, the nominee would also receive the award. Today, only an exact match in votes qualifies as a tie.”
“The first (actual) Oscar tie came in 1949 in the Best Documentary category, which also had a tie in 1986. In 1969, Katharine Hepburn and Barbra Streisand tied for Best Actress for their roles in “The Lion in Winter” and “Funny Girl” respectively. Anyway, back to what we all care about… With 5 correct picks… Me. I was the only one to pick Best Original Screenplay for Django Unchained and me and Tracey both picked Jennifer Lawrence, "Silver Linings Playbook" for Best Actress.
Second up was Tracey with 7 correct picks. Tracey was the only one to pick Paperman for Best Short Film, Animated (this is one that had I seen the film before we picked, I would have picked it too, it’s GREAT). Tracey and Ayla both picked Ang Lee, "Life of Pi" for Best Director and she also picked Skyfall for Best Sound Editing with Granpa.
Next was Granpa with 8 correct picks. Granpa was the only one to pick Searching for Sugar Man for Best Documentary Feature and Inocente for Best Documentary Short (who knew Granps was such a Documentary Buff). Granpa also picked Argo for Best Adapted Screenplay and Les Miserables for Best Makeup and Hairstyling with Nana.
Ayla was next with 8 correct picks. She picked Christoph Waltz, "Django Unchained for Best Supporting Actor and Anne Hathaway, "Les Miserables" for Best Supporting Actress and Life of Pi for Best Cinematography. Ayla, Nana and Granpa all picked Argo for Best Film Editing.
Everyone (but Ray) picked Brave for Best Animated Feature and Les Misérables for Best Sound Mixing. Everyone but Ray and Granpa picked Amour for Best Foreign Feature.
No one picked Life of Pi for Best Music (Original Score), Skyfall from "Skyfall" for Best Music (Original Song), Lincoln for Best Production Design or Curfew for Best Short Film, Live Action.
And now, for the big winner… Nana with a total of 10 correct picks including Argo for Best Picture, Daniel Day Lewis, "Lincoln" for Best Actor, Life of Pi for Best Visual Effects and Anna Karenina for Best Costume Design. Congrats, Nana!!
And now for the best/funniest statistic of the year… with a whooping ZERO correct picks… RAY, whoo hoo!! This year, random picking did NOT work out well. He he he.
Needless to say, we ALL need to see more movies this year.
